Best suited logo file formats - clients help guide (1)

Looking for a logo design and other corporate identities for your business in the UK? Before embarking on a new logo or remodeling the existing one, it is important that you are aware of the usefulness and scope of each type. Ending with an incompatible format will yield more trouble than perks after the point of purchase.

Let’s have a brief look at each of the most common logo file formats,

JPG- Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPG or JPEG is probably the most commonly used formats in the market for images. It is ideal for web-based photographic files, and email signatures, as the smaller file size facilitate prompt page loading. However, It is not suitable for graphics posts with sharp pixel contrast or for printing because they cannot be scaled beyond its original limit ( they lose data permanently upon compressing and gets distorted upon stretching.

PNG- Portable Network Graphics

It has every positive aspect of JPG with additional perks. Even though it is not scalable for stretching, being larger in size it facilitate lossless data compression. Also, being transparent, it can be easily ported over backgrounds and easily adapts features like drop shadows, gradients, and other effects.

EPS-Encapsulated PostScript

It is ideal for printing due to high dpi (dots/pixels per inch). Its features of being editable, transparent, lossless compression and scalable makes it one of the perfect format for a logo. Moreover, unlike some other file formats, it is not constricted by RBG or/and CMYK color model, the color possibility is potentially limitless.

PDF- Portable Document Format

As the abbreviation itself implies, it was not originally created as image format. However, due to its features of being a versatile file format, it offers readability in any system, regardless of hardware, software, and operating system. Moreover, being a vector format, it also provides features like being editable, transparent, lossless compression, and scalable, altogether making it a desirable format.

PDF also offers a feature that allows the user to keep the content intact, without the risk of any other party making unnecessary changes, making it ideal for brochures, business card and other corporate identities along with the logos.

AI- Adobe Illustrator Artwork

AI is a registered trade-name file format of Adobe. An ideal adobe soft is all needed to open this format. Being an advanced vector image format, it is needless to say, it is editable, transparent, lossless compression and scalable. Apart from regular logos, it can be utilized particularly for large-scale graphics (corporate jet/billboard etc.) and illustrations.

PSD- Photoshop Document

PSD is a useful raw, layered Photoshop file before it is exported into its final draft. It allows the user to edit in any layer of the image. Upon completion, it can be converted into other formats such as JPG, Gif etc for sharing, however, this change is unidirectional only.

SVG- Scalable Vector Graphics

It is yet another vector graphic format that is scalable and best fit for the web based image, logo, clip art and icons, etc. They work well on a variety of screen resolution and can be edited via javascript as well, making it a versatile and well suited for web design. SVG can also be optimized as 2D graphics, making it ideal for animation.

GIF- Graphics Interchange Format

It facilitates lossless compression but is restricted in the aspect of the color palette. GIF files can be exported into animated GIFs with the help of Photoshop. It is best suited for simple graphics that do not require any special effect, wide array of colors, such as web-based buttons such as icons, buttons, animated GIFs.

Lesser used image file format

TIFF- Tagged Image Format File

it is best suited for scanners and thus, is ideal for printing high definition images and photographs. Even though these are too large in size, it is not scalable and highly unsuitable for the website, as it would slow down the page load significantly.

BMPs – Bitmaps

It is a rather older version of the image file, that lacks in several aspects as it lacks lossless compression. However, it is still used as it can store 2 D, digital image regardless of the display device. It is compatible with both OS 2 and Microsoft Windows.

Now that you have a wider perspective regarding the types of logo design file format, pick the best one as per your need for your business in the UK, to yield the maximum benefit from it.
